Rule#1
"...the higher the quality and size of the photograph, the easier it is to turn into a masterpiece..."

Size and Quality
The picture(s) you select for a portrait drawing should be as large and clear as possible. This is not to say that good portrait drawings cannot be done from a small, throwaway camera snapshot. It is simply a trade off. If the person's head in the photo is smaller than about 5/8 of an inch it will be difficult to capture their likeness.

On the left
we have an example of a portrait drawn from a large professionally taken photograph. The detail is crisp and the likeness is quite good. The eyes are clearly visible and the expression can be captured easily, making for a stunning portrait.

On the right is an example of a portrait drawn from a fairly small but still perfectly workable 4x6 photograph. The eyes in this photo almost disappear into the face through lack of detail, so the artist must begin creating detail from nothing. The likeness is still quite good, but becomes much harder to achieve.

In this example the face was very small and blurry. The eyes and glasses blended together and there are actually no eyes per say except small darkish blobs. In this instance the eyes have to be completely formed from scratch and though this one ended up turning out fairly well. You will start to see many differences in the achieved likeness.

In conclusion don't get to worried and caught up in finding or not finding the perfect photograph these are just a few examples to let you understand how it all works.
